Wilma Stockenstrom’s poetry has mostly been regarded as cynical and ironical. Thus it has been overlooked that in many ways her poetry is basically symbolic and that it corresponds to most of the characteristic traits of Symbolism. Of particular interest is the totemistic use of objects in nature whereby a contaminated and affected society is conjured to reform.
