Abstract

Language as cathedral: Driepas of T.T. Cloete
In the compilation of Driepas the poet T.T. Cloete intended to build a cathedral in language. In this article the structural characteristics of the Gothic cathedral, specifically those of the Chartres cathedral, are examined to determine possible structural correlations between the edifice and the poetic artefact. The structural links between the cathedral of Chartres and the poems in Driepas were mainly ascertained by implementing the analogy of Cloete’s bountiful usage of enumeration and his meticulous attention to detailed arrangement. This aspect has previously been overlooked by most critics of Driepas.
