<verse-line>Your stance and the ferocity of your frown</verse-line>
<verse-line>shows that you know, that you’ve always known,</verse-line>
<verse-line>exactly who Stephen Gray should truly be.</verse-line>
<verse-line>I envy you this surety of self</verse-line>
<verse-line>but, of course, that’s only the Italian you.</verse-line>
<verse-line>The ‘accident of your birth’, here at home,</verse-line>
<verse-line>still ripples on, still doubts itself sometimes,</verse-line>
<verse-line>still stumbles, yet shares that same forthrightness.</verse-line>
<verse-line>Between local talk, Adamastor, and Shelley,</verse-line>
<verse-line>I’ve found you and have made you my own.</verse-line>
<verse-line>Though I hate your love of popular politics</verse-line>
<verse-line>and complacent academic air,</verse-line>
<verse-line>I look at you there,</verse-line>
<verse-line>in that photo Giovanni took,</verse-line>
<verse-line>and I see my own truth,</verse-line>
<verse-line>our truth.</verse-line>
