<verse-line>to wade in waters where coronets of lily weed cap</verse-line>
<verse-line>the brows of drowsing hippos</verse-line>
<verse-line>let their eyes gleam yellow as they dream over pools</verse-line>
<verse-line>reflecting fever trees, algae and mimosa</verse-line>

<verse-line>permit! for rhino eyes have over the aeons</verse-line>
<verse-line>mirrored trellis works of track-forged trails</verse-line>
<verse-line>where migratory hordes encoded</verse-line>
<verse-line>to creep the earth&#x2019;s seams</verse-line>
<verse-line>find their way to warmth</verse-line>
</verse-group>

<verse-line>midst thorn, hook and barb</verse-line>
<verse-line>grant that their ductile hides and vulnerable horns</verse-line>
<verse-line>remain whole and unhurt</verse-line>
<verse-line>let the descending star-shoots fill the streams</verse-line>
<verse-line>where the herds gather</verse-line>
<verse-line>and phosphorescent waters</verse-line>
<verse-line>dribble from their muzzles as they slurp</verse-line>
</verse-group>

<verse-line>enable a night pricked to life by African ardour</verse-line>
<verse-line>its innominate stars like beams glanced off knife tips</verse-line>
<verse-line>to describe a trapezium over the huddle</verse-line>
<verse-line>of heads, backs and hinds of a hundred rhinos.</verse-line>
